The dry leaf is narrow, dark, and superbly twisted, some with copper-colored tips. The infusion produces a rich, shining dark amber cup. There is a hint of dark chocolate in the aroma of the dry leaf, then when steeped aroma becomes more malty and earthy.
This exceptional tea hails from the Hualien district on the eastern coast of Taiwan. The tea is produced in the summertime when the young tea leaves are bitten at by small indigenous grasshoppers. This action curls the leaf tips and stops their growth. During this, the grasshoppers’ saliva initiates a reaction with the plant the creates a slightly honey-like flavor.
