The blood orange is a variety of orange with crimson, blood-colored flesh. The fruit is smaller than an average orange; its skin is usually pitted, but can be smooth. Some blood oranges may be somewhat tart, while other kinds are sweet while retaining the characteristic blood orange taste. Citrus fruits have been cultivated in Sicily for some time and cultivation has been documented since the time of Moorish rule. Today, Sicilian citrus is found in virtually every country that permits imports. Blood oranges cultivated in the United States and are in season from December to March (Texas), and from November to May (California). Blood oranges' red pigment, anthocyanin, is an antioxidant. This pigment may also diminish the risk of heart disease, some types of cancer, and LDL cholesterol accumulation. Additionally, this and other antioxidants found in blood oranges may reduce the risk of cataracts, and aid in the body's healing process. Blood oranges, like all citrus fruits, are a great source of vitamin C, fiber, and calcium.
Complimenting ways to enjoy Blood Orange::
Neat - Steep the desired amount of Blood Orange and enjoy straight up for a crimson citrus sensation.
Sweet - This blend has natural fruity sweetness, adding a pinch of sugar can smooth the tartness of the hibiscus.
Iced - Simply steep as usual, add your sweetener while you steep, and pour over ice.
Pitcher - Steep a concentrate, generally speaking 4tbsp of tea will make a 2 quart pitcher. If sweeter is desired, its best to use simple syrup. Fill your pitcher with ice and pour in your concentrate, add water to the top or to the desired strength.
Tip - Because the fruits expand while steeping we find using a french press works very well as you can press down on the fruit to squeeze out every last bit of goodness.
Tip - This blend can be steeped for as long as you want, but make sure to use very hot water as the heat will pull the flavors out. If you desire less tartness from the hibiscus, simply steep for 5 minutes or less.
